Agboworin Urges Commitment to Democratic Ideals on Democracy Day

Rep. Abass Adigun Agboworin, lawmaker for Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, has called for greater commitment to democratic ideals, saying governance must deliver hope, development, and opportunities to Nigerians.

In a statement Friday to mark the 2026 Democracy Day, Agboworin described June 12 as a milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of sacrifices by those who fought for democratic governance.

He said Democracy Day should prompt leaders and citizens to reflect on progress made and renew commitment to a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.

“Democracy goes beyond elections,” Agboworin said. “It should be measured by how it improves lives through responsive governance, economic empowerment, quality education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social justice.”

He said the essence of democracy lies in creating opportunities for citizens to thrive and participate in community and national affairs.

Agboworin urged elected representatives at all levels to remain accountable and pursue policies that address public needs and aspirations.

He reaffirmed his commitment to effective representation and people-oriented initiatives for residents of Ibadan North-East and Ibadan South-East.

Paying tribute to heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, the lawmaker urged Nigerians to support democratic institutions and promote peaceful coexistence and national development.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day this year, we must remember that the true test of democracy is its ability to positively impact the lives of the people,” he said.

“We must continue to work together to strengthen our democratic institutions, promote accountability, and ensure that governance delivers hope, development, and opportunities for all Nigerians,” Agboworin added.

He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and urged citizens not to lose faith in democracy but to contribute to a more stable, prosperous, and equitable society.
