Uzodinma Screened For Senatorial Seat, May Resign As Imo Governor

The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, was successfully screened on Saturday to contest for the Imo West Senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

MOUTHPIECE NGR reports that Uzodinma was screened by the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, to contest the party’s primary election ahead of the January 2027 National Assembly elections.

If Uzodinma wins the Imo West Senatorial seat in the January 2027 National Assembly election and is sworn in June 2027, he will resign the governorship seat approximately 6-7 months before the end of his term, which runs until mid-January 2028.

By implication, his deputy, Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, would then take over as Governor of Imo State for the remaining period.

Ekomaru assumed office on January 15, 2024, to serve alongside Governor Uzodimma in his second term.

In other news, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday, officially announced that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket has been zoned to the south.

The announcement, which was made during the NDC National Convention in Abuja, explained that the party’s presidential ticket will go to the south for a single four-year term in 2027, and then to the North in 2031.

The party clarified that its decision is based on the principles of power-sharing and rotation between the Northern and Southern regions of Nigeria.

The NDC said its decision was taken in the supreme interest of national healing and to douse sectional tension and to guarantee that the NDC remains a party for all Nigerians.
