Democracy Day: Folajimi Oyekunle Hails New Minority Leadership, Calls for Constructive Opposition

Ibadan North Federal Constituency lawmaker, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle, has congratulated the newly reconstituted Minority Leadership of the House of Representatives, saying their emergence reflects democratic maturity and stronger parliamentary opposition.

In a Democracy Day statement signed Friday, Oyekunle, popularly known as DON, commended opposition parties in the Green Chamber for agreeing on the leadership through consensus.

Rep. Frederick Agbedi, PDP Bayelsa, emerged as Minority Leader. Rep. Abdussamad Dasuki, ADC Sokoto, is Deputy Minority Leader. Rep. Mansur Manu Soro, APM Bauchi, is Minority Whip, while Rep. George Ozodinobi, ADC Anambra, retained his position as Deputy Minority Whip.

Oyekunle said the development underscores the importance of dialogue and inclusive participation in sustaining democratic institutions.

“Democracy thrives where there is respect for differing opinions, constructive opposition and commitment to national progress. The emergence of the new Minority Leadership through consensus demonstrates the enduring strength of our democratic culture and parliamentary tradition,” he said.

The lawmaker urged the new leaders to provide purposeful representation, advance national interest, and strengthen legislative oversight.

“As we commemorate Democracy Day, I celebrate with the leadership and members of the House of Representatives and urge all political actors to remain committed to democratic ideals, unity and people-oriented governance,” he said.

Oyekunle noted that June 12 remains a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices of patriots who shaped the nation’s advancement.

He reaffirmed his commitment to quality representation for Ibadan North and called on Nigerians to support efforts to deepen democratic values.
