The Majority Leader of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, has called for the immediate grading and rehabilitation of rural roads across all local government areas in the state.
Adedoyin made the call on Tuesday, while moving a motion on the floor of the House directing all Local Government Chairmen to commence rural road grading.
Adedoyin, who represents Ogbomoso South state constituency, said that rural roads are lifelines for communities, connecting farmers to markets, children to schools, and residents to healthcare facilities, adding that their deteriorating condition has continued to make movement difficult for rural dwellers, farmers, traders and other road users.
With the dry season approaching, the Majority Leader called for a coordinated grading exercise across the 33 Local Government Areas, the restoration of faulty graders to full operational capacity, and a renewed commitment by Local Government Chairmen to routine road maintenance.
However, after extensive deliberations, the House resolved to:
i. Commend Governor Seyi Makinde for ongoing urban road construction, rehabilitation and attention to inner roads across the state.
ii. Direct the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters to mobilise Local Government Chairmen for immediate rural road grading.
iii. Ensure the repair of faulty graders to reduce the need for acquiring new equipment and facilitate effective road maintenance.
iv. Direct Local Government Chairmen to prioritise rural road rehabilitation to ease transportation, boost agricultural activities, stimulate local economies and improve internally generated revenue.
The lawmaker said he firmly believes development must extend beyond urban centres, stressing that rural communities deserve accessible roads and responsive governance.
“No community should be left behind in our collective pursuit of sustainable development,” he said.
