JUST IN: Retired Maj-Gen Rabe Abubakar Dies in Bandits’ Captivity in Katsina
Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, has died in captivity two weeks after being abducted with his wife in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed his death on Saturday, saying he died from complications of diabetes and hypertension while held by abductors.
Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, described the incident as a tragic loss despite efforts to secure the general’s release.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless efforts of the State Government and security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” Mu’azu said.
“The deceased retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension. His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country.”
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a “dark moment” and called for a collective, intensified front against criminal elements threatening communities. He extended condolences to the family and country.
Rabe and his wife were kidnapped around Matazu while travelling to a wedding ceremony, Vanguard reported. Days later, a video from the captors showed the couple and demanded the release of three detained associates identified as Sani, Aminu, and Nasiru, plus the return of allegedly seized livestock.
In the video, Rabe’s wife appealed to the Katsina government and leaders of five LGAs to meet the demands. Rabe also spoke briefly, calling for peace and dialogue and noting the abductors’ interest in peaceful coexistence.
