Media Key to Boosting Public Trust in Army— GOC Nnebeife
Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 3, Operation Fansan Yama, has urged journalists to play a more constructive role in national development through responsible and patriotic reporting.
This call was made on Wednesday during a media parley in Ibadan, Oyo State, concluding the 2025 military-media engagement within the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
The event, fostering mutual respect and collaboration between senior military officers and the press, highlighted the Nigerian Army’s recognition of the media’s strategic role in shaping public perception, promoting national unity, and supporting security operations.
Major General Nnebeife emphasized that the media is a critical partner in nation-building, with balanced and positive reportage significantly contributing to public confidence in the armed forces and national institutions. He stressed the importance of highlighting the military’s progress, sacrifices, and successes in safeguarding lives and property.
The GOC explained that the engagement aimed to strengthen the relationship between the Nigerian Army and the media, emphasizing that effective communication is essential for operational success, particularly in the ongoing fight against insecurity. He reiterated that this is not a call for propaganda but a patriotic appeal for fair, factual, and development-oriented journalism. Responsible reporting helps prevent misinformation and distrust, especially during security challenges.
Major General Nnebeife noted that journalists serve as a bridge between the military and the civilian population, urging media practitioners to verify information, avoid sensationalism, and consider the broader national interest in their reportage. He commended journalists for their professionalism and dedication, acknowledging their consistent efforts in reporting the activities of 2 Division. Positive and accurate reporting reassures the public and motivates troops.
Reaffirming his commitment to openness, Major General Nnebeife assured journalists of the Division’s willingness to continue engaging the media. He paid tribute to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for his leadership and people-centered approach, highlighting the COAS’s commitment to the welfare of officers and soldiers.
Reflecting on recent security challenges, the GOC referenced the disturbances in Kwara State, expressing satisfaction with the restoration of peace. He emphasized that security is a collective responsibility, requiring support from traditional institutions, community leaders, and the media. Positive narratives encourage community cooperation, intelligence sharing, and trust.
Major General Nnebeife stressed that the fight against insecurity cannot be won by the military alone, calling on all stakeholders to work together. He reiterated that the Nigerian Army exists to protect the nation’s sovereignty and the wellbeing of its citizens.
Expressing satisfaction with his personnel, Major General Nnebeife praised the officers and soldiers of 2 Division for their dedication and professionalism. He assured that the Division would remain vigilant and proactive.
The media parley, attended by top Army officers, underscored the importance of media engagement and civil-military relations. Participants described the engagement as timely and constructive. The call by Major General Chinedu Nnebeife highlights the belief that when the military and media work together responsibly, Nigeria stands stronger in its quest for peace, stability, and progress.
