Lawmakers claiming to have moved to the APC have not fulfilled Supreme court’s requirement— Officials
There were growing indications that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, might be considering leaving the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress, following renewed political unrest in the state.
According to The Punch, reports noted that the situation intensified after 17 members of the House of Assembly aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, announced their defection from the PDP to the APC last Friday.
The move immediately altered the power structure of the Assembly. Meanwhile, the three lawmakers believed to be loyal to Governor Fubara had not returned to legislative activities since the lifting of the state’s six-month emergency rule, creating further uncertainty about the governor’s political direction.
In a discussion with The PUNCH, a PDP chieftain and former federal lawmaker, Ogbonna Nwuke, was quoted as saying that recent political developments across the South-South suggested that Fubara might eventually join the ruling APC.
However, a senior official in the Government House, who spoke on condition of anonymity, dismissed the speculation and maintained that Governor Fubara had not indicated any intention to leave the PDP.
He said, “We’re not aware that the governor wants to defect. Even the lawmakers claiming to have moved to the All Progressives Congress, have not fulfilled the Supreme Court requirement of registering at their wards. Until they produce evidence, nobody should take their claims seriously.”
