Gender Bill: ‘We can not continue to negotiate our rights’— Princess Adedoja

A chieftain of People’s Democratic Party in Oyo State, Princess Aderonke Rahmat Adedoja has said it is pitiable that masculinity still pervades the modern democracy despite civilization and well designed polity.

Adedoja in a statement personally signed by her and and made available to Mouthpiece NGR on Thursday submitted that the leopard seem not to change its spot in Nigeria politics.

According to her, the recent gender bill being passed by the men of the Ninth assembly is nothing but affront on fundamental human rights and unscrupulous act.

She noted that the actions have taken us backwards and undermine the importance and relevance of women’s contributions to the governance of Nigeria including the key role women play to bring victory to political parties in elections at all levels across the country.

The statement further read: “We as women cannot continue to negotiate our rights, sanctity and dignity as the bill should be re-presented and needful be done”

“The men of the ninth assembly have reinforced the discrimination and political bias against women as the following were enshrined:

  • denying citizenship to a foreign- born husband of a Nigerian woman ( while it allows Nigerian men’s foreign- born wives to be awarded automatic citizenship.
  • denying Nigerian women indigeneity through marriage;
  • denying 35 percent appointed positions for women and settling for just 20 percent;
  • denying women affirmative action in party administration and leadership;
  • And lastly, denying specific seats for women in National Assembly.

This is Inglorious as the five bills seeking to exclude women full participation in politics and developmental activities will miss chance to redesign Nigeria’s political landscape.

Nigeria without iota of doubt need women in building the nation and sustainability of strength in all ramifications.
