LAUTECH don appeals to Makinde to utilize dams for agricultural productivity

A lecturer in the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Prof. Gbade Oyewumi Oyediran has appealed to the executive Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde to develop and utilize dams for agricultural Productivity. 

The professor of Soil Science made the call while delivering his presentation at the school 37th inauguration lecture series held at The Great Hall, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso— under the distinguished Chairmanship of Professor MO, Ologude, Vice Chancellor. 

While speaking with Mouthpiece NGR metro,  Professor Oyediran said that Governor Seyi Makinde should endeavor to develop and utilize the dams in Oke- Ogun area for agricultural productivity especially during the dry season. 

The LAUTECH don noted that dams have great potentials for food production as well as creating job opportunities and enhancing the economy of the state. 

In a topic titled “Transversing Hydromorphic Ecosystem For Food Security”,  Oyediran was of the view that Hydromorphic soils are among the most productive soils in the world and have great potentials that can be exploited intensively with proper management to support the food needs of the growing populations especially in the dry season instead of allowing the lands to waste away. 

The Professor of Science listed soil fertility, effect of water logging, cost of development and maintenance, water management, weed management and other physical constraints of wetness which include difficult accessibility, decreased human or machinery trafficability, soil workability, flood hazard and carrying capacity as the major limitations to wetland use in the tropics.

Oyediran said knowledge-intensive, improved soil and water management system will enable the wetland ecosystem dwellers/farmers increase their food production abilities. 

He also added that intensive use of Hydromorphic ecosystem with adequate soil and water management techniques could serve as a possible remedy for food insecurity. 

At the event included Vice Chancellor, Professor MO Ologunde, Deans and provost, register and eminent professors. 

Others are monarchs, lecturers, well wishers and students.
