How PFIPC DG, Prince Adeyemi was arrested in Osun
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Response Team, IRT, have arrested Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-styled Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC, in Osun State.
Adeyemi, who had been on the radar of security agencies, was apprehended in an intelligence-led operation following weeks of investigation into allegations surrounding the purported federal agency.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, confirmed the arrest to our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said the suspect was picked up without incident and has been moved to police custody for further interrogation.
Security sources said operatives had earlier raided Adeyemi’s family residence in the course of tracking him, and questioned family members during the search.
Adeyemi came into national limelight after controversy trailed the activities of the PFIPC, an organisation government officials described as having no legal backing or official recognition.
The controversy deepened over allegations that he claimed close ties with top government officials and used the platform to wield influence in government circles.
The matter drew wider attention following claims that huge sums of money were collected from individuals in exchange for promises of government appointments. Those allegations are still under investigation and have not been proven in court.
The Presidency had earlier distanced itself from the organisation. The Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, also denied any connection with the group, stating that neither his office nor the Presidency authorised the operations of PFIPC.
Police investigators said Adeyemi would be questioned on the circumstances surrounding the establishment and operations of the organisation, the authenticity of documents allegedly used, and claims that some persons were deceived into believing it was an official government body.
Investigators will also determine whether other suspects were involved and whether additional offences, including impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, forgery and conspiracy, were committed.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued a detailed statement or announced possible charges.
Adeyemi is expected to remain in custody pending the conclusion of investigations and possible arraignment.
