US Mission Warns Nigerians on Visa Compliance, Cites Risk to Future Travel

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerian travellers to comply fully with visa terms, saying violations could affect future chances of travelling, studying, or working in the US.

The mission gave the advice Monday in a post on X under its #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign, urging visa holders to stay only for the period approved by US immigration authorities.

“Staying compliant with US immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travellers,” the mission said.

It urged visitors, students, and workers to keep travel documents valid, obey visa conditions, and avoid actions that could lead to ineligibility.

“Whether you’re studying, working, or visiting the United States, always honour the terms of your visa. Follow the rules. Stay only as long as you are authorised. Keep your documents updated,” the post added.

The warning comes amid tighter US visa policies and increased scrutiny of Nigerian applicants over visa overstays. Washington has recently reduced the validity period of most non-immigrant visas for Nigerians and introduced additional vetting, including disclosure of social media usernames.

The mission said compliance protects the integrity of the visa process and supports legitimate travel between both countries.

“When you respect the process, everyone wins,” it added.
