Four people have been killed and 16 others injured after a container truck overturned onto an interstate Toyota Hiace bus on Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 28, 2026, when an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with the bus with registration number GME-589 ZU.

According to the agency, preliminary findings showed the truck was travelling up the bridge at excessive speed when it collided with the bus.

The driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid the collision, causing the truck to overturn onto the bus.

“The impact was severe and tragically resulted in the loss of four adult males who were confirmed dead at the scene, while 16 other adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries,” LASEMA said.

The agency said its Beta Whales Team from Epe Base was deployed immediately after receiving a distress call.

The team, working with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force, secured the scene, administered first aid to the injured and took them to Epe General Hospital.

LASEMA said a private crane had been secured to recover the overturned truck and container to allow responders to safely remove the bodies of the deceased.

It added that recovery was ongoing, while traffic management measures had been put in place along the affected road.

The Lagos State Government commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, LASEMA said its teams also handled two other road incidents in Agege and Igando on Wednesday.

At about 4:09 a.m., the agency’s Tiger Team from C3 Base responded to a truck accident near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road.

The team found a truck with registration number KTU-940XT that had rammed into a solar-powered streetlight pole before mounting the road median and obstructing traffic.

Preliminary findings attributed the accident to reckless driving. No casualty was recorded, although the streetlight pole and the front section of the truck were damaged.

LASEMA said it diverted traffic to prevent further incidents. Following the arrival of its heavy-duty recovery equipment, Elephant, the truck was removed and taken to Abattoir Police Station. The road was subsequently reopened.

In another incident, LASEMA’s Beta Team from Igando Base responded to a collision involving a DAF truck, SMK 795 XY, and a Toyota Corolla, AKD 169 EA, at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, along LASU-Igando Road.

According to LASEMA, a broken-down truck on the opposite side had caused traffic build-up before the DAF truck, which was driving against traffic, collided with the Corolla.

The collision blocked half of the road inward Igando. No death was recorded, but the Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury and was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate.

LASEMA said the Corolla had been towed to Igando Police Station, while its heavy-duty equipment, Super Metro, was deployed to move the DAF truck to a lay-by and restore traffic flow.

The government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives through continued investment in emergency management and commended LASEMA and collaborating agencies for their prompt response.

Motorists were urged to observe speed limits, avoid driving against traffic and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition.

Residents were advised to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free lines.
