Large turnout as Afonja sponsors free World Cup final viewing to drum support for Adekanmbi/Open ticket in Ogbomoso

There was a large turnout of football lovers in Ogbomoso on Sunday evening as former Oyo State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Professor Abdul-Rahman Raphael Afonja, sponsored free viewing centres for the FIFA World Cup final in support of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, governorship ticket of Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi and Engr. Open Salawu.

The event, held across several viewing centres in Ogbomoso, was aimed at mobilising youths and residents while promoting the APM candidates ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Oyo State.

The final match, played between Spain and Argentina, ended 1-0 in favour of Spain. The winning goal was scored by Fernando Torres in the 106th minute of extra time, sparking wild celebrations at the viewing centres.

Hundreds of residents trooped out not only to watch the much-anticipated match but also to take advantage of the free entertainment provided by Professor Afonja.

The viewing centres included Adunni Viewing Centre, Papa Alajiki Viewing Centre, Sabo Viewing Centre, and other designated locations across Ogbomoso metropolis.

The atmosphere was lively as supporters cheered, sang, and waved, while APM mobilisers used the gathering to engage with youths on the party’s vision for Oyo State.

This is not the first time Professor Afonja has supported grassroots initiatives in Ogbomoso. Over the years, he has sponsored sporting activities, talent hunts, and football competitions aimed at engaging and empowering young people in the zone.

Speaking with MOUTHPIECE NGR, Professor Afonja said the free World Cup viewing was part of his commitment to youth development and political mobilisation.

“The free football show at several viewing centres is in support of Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi and Engr. Open Salawu. They are candidates with impeccable qualities and the capacity to deliver good governance to the people of Oyo State,” he said.

He described the APM ticket as the best option for the state, urging youths to rally behind all APM candidates in the forthcoming elections.

“The Allied People’s Movement is the only formidable party with credible candidates who understand the challenges of our people. I urge our youths to come out en masse and vote for competence, experience, and integrity,” Afonja added.

Football lovers however commended the former commissioner for the gesture, describing it as a way of bringing people together while creating awareness for the APM.

The free viewing initiative drew praise from residents, many of whom said such football competition help reduce idleness among youths and promote unity across communities.
