Nigerian Students Win Gold at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai
Team Nigeria has made history after winning the Gold Award in the Middle School Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.
The victory marks Nigeria’s first appearance at the global competition and a landmark achievement for the country’s young spellers on the world stage.
The four-member team comprised:

– *Abdurrahman Yusuf*
– *Chinedu Okediachi*
– *Maryam Yusuf*
The students qualified after excelling at both the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.
Two members of the team, Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, also won individual medals at the competition.
Competing against some of the world’s best young spellers, the team secured gold for Nigeria in their debut outing.
The achievement has been widely celebrated as a major boost for education and academic excellence, with Nigerians praising the students for putting the country in the global spotlight.
