Lagos-Ibadan Road Tanker Fire Claims Life, Leaves Community Devastated
Lagos, Nigeria – A tragic tanker fire on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the life of a mother of four and left numerous others injured and displaced. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, when a petrol-laden tanker overturned near a commercial bank.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the tanker fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and explode. The resulting fire spread rapidly, damaging homes and businesses within a kilometer of the expressway. The community suffered significant property damage, with buildings sustaining shattered windows, damaged roofs, and cracked walls.
Mercy Emmanuel, a resident of the area, tragically lost her life in the fire while attempting to escape. Her husband, Ismail Emmanuel, recounted the harrowing ordeal of seeking medical help and facing a staggering hospital deposit. Despite their desperate efforts, Mercy succumbed to her injuries.
Another resident, Bidemi, shared that a neighbor, known as Iya Ada, was also injured while trying to save her children. Her home was severely damaged, and she is currently hospitalized.
The tanker fire has left the community devastated, with many residents losing their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones. Several victims have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State for support, as many lost vehicles that were essential for their income.
Governor Abiodun has expressed his condolences to the affected families and urged tanker drivers to exercise caution on the roads. The incident highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
