ECOWAS Monitors Guinea-Bissau Peace Mission
Bissau, Guinea-Bissau – A high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission is currently in Guinea-Bissau to assess the progress of the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission (ESAM).
Led by General Mactar DIOP, Chief of Staff of the ECOWAS Standby Force, the delegation is conducting a thorough review of ESAM’s operations, focusing on its impact on the ground and its contribution to stability in the country.
On the first day of the visit, the delegation met with various government officials to discuss the security situation and the mission’s role in addressing challenges. They also inspected a level 2 hospital deployed by Côte d’Ivoire, which has provided free medical care to over 26,000 patients since May 2022.
The delegation also participated in a joint patrol in the Reino da Jaal district, an area affected by inter-ethnic conflict. This firsthand experience allowed them to assess the security situation and the effectiveness of the mission’s deployment.
The ECOWAS mission’s continued presence in Guinea-Bissau is crucial for maintaining peace and stability.
