Osun monarch, nine others charged in shrine attack

The police yesterday arraigned an Osun State monarch, Elegboro of Ijebu-Jesa, Oba Olufemi Agunsoye, 65, along with nine others before a Magistrate Court in Ijebu-Ijesa, over alleged arson and destruction of a shrine.


Oba Agunsoye was arraigned alongside the others on a seven-count charge bordering on arson, conspiracy, and unlawful entry into a shrine, among others.

The monarch and the others were said to have, between January 2017 and August 2022, unlawfully set on fire buildings of the proposed University of Agriculture at Ijebu-Ijesa, two tractors and one caterpillar truck loader valued over N3 billion, being property one Major Loye Omitunde (rtd).
It added that the defendants broke into Ariyan shrine also known as ‘Arugbo sacred shrine, and took away sand from there.

Magistrate Kike Adebayo adjourned the matter till February 6, 2023 for mention.
