NOUN Bursar, Nasiru Gusau Marafa, Shot Dead in Zamfara

The National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, has announced the death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.

In an official notice signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, on Sunday, the university said Marafa died on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in what it described as a “sudden and untimely” incident.

“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the statement read.

The university did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the attack or identify the perpetrators.

Describing him as a dedicated and committed staff member, NOUN said Marafa served the institution meritoriously and held various positions of responsibility during his career. He was appointed Bursar of the university in September 2026.

The university said his death represents a “profound loss” to the institution.

“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement said.

NOUN extended its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and all those mourning his death.

The university prayed that Allah grants the family and the NOUN community the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.

The university added that further information on burial arrangements will be communicated once details are released by the family.
