FG To Launch Portal For Nigerians To Track Spending By 774 LGAs

The Federal Government is planning to launch a *central transparency portal* that will enable Nigerians to track allocations, budgets, development plans and audited accounts of the country’s *774 local government areas*.

*Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun*, disclosed this in Abuja while presenting the government’s assessment titled _“Nigeria’s Reforms Scorecard: Benefits, Costs and Harms Prevented.”_

Oyedele said the platform is designed to strengthen accountability in the management of resources allocated to states and local governments.

According to him, citizens will be able to select any LGA and access its development plan, annual budget and audited accounts. This, he said, will create a direct link between public allocations and projects delivered at the grassroots.

The initiative comes amid a sharp rise in allocations to sub-national governments following the removal of petrol subsidy and FX reforms.

Data from the Federal Ministry of Finance shows the three tiers of government shared *N2.036 trillion* in March 2026. States got *N657.596 billion* while LGAs received *N468.826 billion*.

By June 2026, FAAC disbursements rose to *N2.551 trillion*. States received *N838.208 billion* and LGAs *N591.390 billion*.

Oyedele said the increased resources will only improve living conditions if Nigerians can determine how the money is spent.

*Not Federal Control, But Citizen Oversight*

The minister stressed that the portal is not for federal control of states and LGAs. Under Nigeria’s federal structure, he noted, each tier has authority over its statutory revenue.

_“Rather, the system will give citizens access to reliable information on how public resources are being deployed,”_ he said.

The FG is also encouraging states to adopt similar measures. Oyedele said discussions are ongoing and some states have expressed willingness to develop comparable reporting mechanisms.

When operational, the portal is expected to provide a consolidated picture of public finances across all 774 LGAs — including available resources, budgeted projects and implementation status.

The minister said economic reforms generated *N15.8 trillion* in additional resources for the Federation between June 2023 and December 2025.

Of the amount, *N10.4 trillion* went to states and LGAs, while the Federal Government got *N5.4 trillion*.

However, Oyedele acknowledged that the FG cannot independently determine if states and LGAs are using the funds effectively.

_“Greater accountability will ultimately depend on citizens having access to information to assess the performance of their governments,”_ he said.

The portal, he added, will help Nigerians move beyond tracking monthly allocations to assessing what governments actually deliver.
