Kebbi Judge’s Family Says N50m Ransom Paid For His Release After 8 Days In Captivity

The family of Justice Faruk Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has confirmed paying N50 million to kidnappers to secure his release.

The judge was abducted from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area on July 26, and regained his freedom on Monday. His release was earlier confirmed by the Kebbi State Police Command, the Ministry of Justice, and his family.

A family member who spoke to newsmen in secret said the abductors initially demanded N200 million. After days of negotiations, they accepted N50 million, according to _Daily Trust_.

Another relative told Hausa online platform _DCL Hausa_ that the ransom was delivered on Friday at a location deep inside a forest, more than 70 kilometres from Birnin Kebbi.

The source alleged that the abductors also demanded five bottles of malt drinks and five bottles of Dudu drinks before collecting the ransom.

The family member said Justice Bunza is currently recuperating at his residence and will speak publicly about his ordeal after he has fully recovered.

The relative disclosed that the family was informed of the judge’s release between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Monday. He was reportedly brought home in a commercial vehicle transporting firewood.

According to the source, the judge appeared to be in good health and showed no visible signs of physical abuse.

The family also appreciated the Kebbi State Government, security agencies, the judiciary and residents of the state for their support, prayers and solidarity during the period of the abduction.
