Tension in Jos South as Soldiers Allegedly Shoot Two Women Dead, Residents Protest

Tension gripped parts of Jos South Local Government Area on Monday after two women were allegedly shot dead by military personnel in Naya Gotta community, Gyel District. One other person was also reportedly injured.

The incident triggered protests as residents demanded justice for the victims.

According to residents, the women were shot in the early hours of Monday after approaching a military convoy that had driven into the community. They said the women asked the personnel the reason for their visit and requested to inspect the contents of their vehicle.

A former councillor of the area and PDP candidate in the upcoming elections, Hon. Mrs. Chundung Bitrus Pwajok Kele, said one of the soldiers involved had dreadlocks — an appearance she described as unusual for security personnel in Nigeria. 

She said the unusual appearance made the women cautious, prompting them to ask questions and seek to inspect the vehicle. The situation, she added, escalated and led to the shooting.

The victims included a nursing mother, she said.

Community members have called on security authorities to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to account. 

Efforts to get an official reaction from the military as of press time were unsuccessful.
