Canada Ranked 7th Most Powerful Passport in 2026, 27 African Countries Get Easier Entry
Canada’s passport has been ranked the 7th most powerful in the world in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, giving its holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 183 destinations globally.
The annual ranking, compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association, IATA, is widely regarded as a leading measure of global passport strength and international mobility.
Beyond rating Canadian travel privileges, the index also highlights Canada’s entry policies for foreign nationals. According to the report, citizens of 27 African countries can travel to Canada without first obtaining a traditional visitor visa from a Canadian embassy or consulate, provided they meet specific entry requirements.
The report states that eligible travellers can enter Canada through three arrangements: visa-free access, visa-on-arrival, VOA, or an Electronic Travel Authorisation, eTA.
While visa-free travellers do not need a pre-departure visa, those requiring an eTA can complete a simple online application that is generally processed faster and with fewer requirements than a standard visitor visa.
The index noted that the simplified arrangements benefit business travellers, tourists and families by reducing travel barriers and processing delays. However, it also highlighted the disparity in global travel freedom, as citizens of many other African countries still face the lengthy and costly process of securing a traditional Canadian visa.
