Rivers Assembly Summons Heirs Energies MD Over Contract Termination Allegation
The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a final warning to Heirs Energies Limited, directing the company’s management to appear before lawmakers on July 20 or risk legal action against its managing director.
The warning followed the company’s repeated failure to respond to a petition submitted by the Omuohoa community in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area.
The community had approached the Assembly over the alleged termination of contracts involving workers from Omuohoa who were engaged by Heirs Energies. The petitioners requested that the affected workers be reinstated.
According to the Assembly, the company failed to honour invitations from the House Committee on Public Petitions to address the allegations.
During plenary, Speaker Martin Amaewhule criticised the company’s refusal to appear before the committee, warning that the Assembly would use its constitutional authority if the summons was ignored again.
He said the House could issue a warrant for the arrest of the company’s managing director if Heirs Energies failed to appear on the scheduled date.
Meanwhile, the Assembly also directed Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited to begin cleanup and restoration efforts following an oil spill that affected land along the Ogoni-Bonny Pipeline in B-Dere community, Gokana Local Government Area.
Lawmakers further called for the immediate payment of more than ₦205 million in approved compensation to individuals and families affected by the spill.
In another resolution, the House ordered Zest Optimal Global Services to commence payment of outstanding entitlements owed to 16 former employees.
The Assembly later adjourned plenary proceedings until July 10.
