ADC Woos Ex-Kano Deputy Gov Gawuna for 2027 Governorship Ticket
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified efforts to draft former Kano deputy governor Nasiru Gawuna as its candidate for the 2027 governorship election, party sources say.
Top ADC figures have held consultations with Gawuna’s close allies to persuade him to accept the ticket, sources familiar with the talks said. The party has offered wide-ranging concessions, including State House of Assembly and House of Representatives nominations for his loyalists.
ADC leaders have also assured Gawuna of strong financial backing for his campaign if he joins the party and runs. Former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal and former ambassador Faruk Yabo are reportedly among key actors leading the push.
Gawuna, the APC governorship candidate in 2023, has previously affirmed loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement. But insiders say sustained pressure and the ADC’s offers have triggered fresh deliberations in his camp.
The ADC has yet to announce a winner from its Kano governorship primary contested by Ibrahim Khalil and Ibrahim Little. Sources link the delay to ongoing talks with Gawuna.
Gawuna remains one of Kano’s most influential opposition figures, with a strong grassroots base across several local government areas. Political observers say his entry under the ADC could significantly alter the 2027 race against the incumbent.
Neither Gawuna nor ADC officials had publicly commented on the reported negotiations at press time.
