APC Luxury Campaign SUVs Spark Debate Amid Rising Poverty

A video showing luxury SUVs branded for political campaigns has sparked public debate over political spending amid growing concerns about poverty and the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

The controversy comes after a United Nations-backed report found that an additional 17.9 million Nigerians became multidimensionally poor between 2021 and 2024. The comparable poverty rate increased from 33 per cent to 38.7 per cent during the period, according to the 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index.

Many Nigerians continue to face difficulties paying for transportation, food, rent and other basic necessities. In Abuja, concerns have also been raised about commuters relying on crowded pickup trucks and informal transport services.

The luxury vehicles have prompted social media users to question political parties’ spending priorities and call for greater attention to essential public services, including healthcare, education and emergency response.

However, the video alone does not establish who owns the vehicles, how much they cost, or whether public funds were used to finance them.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the debate highlights growing public interest in campaign financing, transparency and the economic plans of political parties.

The central question remains whether political spending is being matched by clear commitments to improving the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
