2027: Obasanjo Questions Tinubu’s Second Term Push Amid Hardship
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has questioned whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves another four years in office, citing the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
According to a report by Daily Independent on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Obasanjo challenged the argument that Tinubu should be allowed to seek a second term to complete his economic agenda.
The former President said performance should be judged by how government policies affect citizens, not by giving an administration more time to implement its programmes. He expressed concern over the rising cost of living, declining purchasing power and the depreciation of the naira, noting its implications for households and businesses.
Obasanjo also referenced economic developments in neighbouring Ghana to illustrate his concerns about Nigeria’s economic management. He claimed Ghana’s currency, which he said was inherited at about 16 cedis to one US dollar, had appreciated to around 10 cedis to the dollar within six months under its current president.
He further cited the case of Ghanaian cocoa farmers who, according to him, approached their president over concerns that the cedi’s appreciation was affecting the prices they received for their produce.
Questioning the push for Tinubu to continue beyond 2027, Obasanjo asked:
“What policies are you seeing through? You impoverish your people and you want to see impoverishment through? What are you seeing through?”
