Ogbomoso Egungun Festival Tragedy: Oke Legacy Condoles Victims’ Families, Commends Soun for Suspending Festival

House of Representatives candidate of the Allied People’s Movement for Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Oriire Federal Constituency in Oyo state, Hon. John Adisa-Oke, Ph.D, popularly known as Oke Legacy, has expressed grief over the loss of lives during the Egungun Festival at Aguodo, Okelerin, in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

In a statement on Monday, Adisa-Oke said he received the news of the incident “with deep sadness,” noting that the tragedy claimed lives and left several others injured.

“My heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved families and everyone affected by this tragic event,” he said.

Adisa-Oke described Ogbomoso as a community renowned for its rich cultural heritage and respect for tradition, but urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while authorities investigate the incident.

“While we mourn this painful loss, I urge our people to remain calm, law-abiding, and allow the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

Oke Legacy commended the Soun of Ogbomosoland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, for suspending the Egungun Festival following the incident.

“I commend His Imperial Majesty for his swift intervention in suspending the Egungun Festival. His timely action reflects a commitment to preserving peace and order in Ogbomosoland,” Adisa-Oke stated.

He further called for stronger safety measures around cultural festivals to prevent a recurrence, saying such events should remain symbols of unity and communal pride.

“As we seek justice for the victims, we must also strengthen safety measures around our cultural festivals so they continue to serve as symbols of unity, identity, and communal pride, not occasions for avoidable tragedy,” he added.

Adisa-Oke prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and comfort for the bereaved families.

“I pray that Almighty God grants eternal rest to the departed and comfort and strength to every family affected by this painful loss.”
