Man Asks Sharia Court to Compel Daughter to Accept Marriage Proposal

A father of 11, Lawal Hamisu, has asked Sharia Court II sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, to compel his daughter, Fatima Lawal, to accept a marriage proposal after she allegedly rejected several suitors.

Hamisu told the court that his daughter, who is of marriageable age, had consistently turned down proposals despite repeated efforts by the family. He urged the court to intervene and direct her to choose a suitable husband.

According to him, Fatima’s refusal had become a source of concern for the family, prompting him to seek legal intervention through the Sharia Court.

In her response, Fatima opposed her father’s request. She insisted she could not be forced into marriage against her wishes and told the court she would only marry someone of her own choice when she is ready.

After hearing both parties, the presiding judge adjourned the matter to allow for further proceedings and possible reconciliation between father and daughter.

The case has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating the balance between parental guidance, religious customs, and an individual’s right to choose a life partner.
