Court Remands Sowore in Kuje Prison Till Wednesday

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered human rights activist and AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre until Wednesday.

Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order Monday, days after revoking Sowore’s bail.

Earlier in the day, the court dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal over comments in which he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.” Sowore is standing trial on charges filed by the DSS linked to those remarks, which he has denied.

In June, Sowore had asked Justice Umar to step down, saying he was forced to represent himself after his lawyers withdrew, citing “persistent hostility and unfair treatment.”

In a post on X after Monday’s session, Sowore said he filed a fresh recusal motion himself: “Soon after today’s court hearing… where I represented myself because my lawyers could no longer appear before Justice M.G. Umar due to persistent maltreatment, I personally moved a motion asking the judge, once again, to recuse himself.”
