2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking: Agboworin Calls For Collective Action To Save Youths
As the world marks the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the lawmaker representing Ibadan South East/North East federal constituency, Rep. Abass Adigun (Agboworin), has called on families, schools, religious institutions, community leaders and government agencies to intensify efforts toward protecting young people from the dangers of substance abuse and illegal drug activities.
The lawmaker, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Narcotic Drugs, in a press statement issued by his Media Group in Ibadan, stressed that drug abuse remains a serious challenge affecting the health, future and productivity of many youths.
He noted that the fight against illicit drugs should not be left to law enforcement agencies alone.
He emphasized that young people represent the strength and future of every society, adding that creating opportunities for education, skills acquisition, mentorship and constructive engagement would significantly reduce vulnerability to drug abuse and criminal influences.
According to him, “Our youths deserve an environment that inspires hope, purpose and positive values. We must continue to work together to ensure that they are guided away from harmful substances and encouraged toward productive and meaningful lives.”
Agboworin also commended organizations, healthcare professionals, educators and volunteers who continue to create awareness and provide support for individuals battling addiction, describing their efforts as critical to building safer and healthier communities.
He urged citizens to use the occasion of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as a reminder of the collective responsibility to promote a drug-free society and empower young people to become agents of positive change.
“Together, we can build stronger communities and secure a brighter future for generations to come,” he stated.
