Gov. Yusuf Urges Kwankwaso to Back Peace Efforts in Kano, Warns Against Division

Governor Abba Yusuf has appealed to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, national leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, to support efforts to restore peace, unity and development in Kano State.

Speaking on Tuesday at the annual Hawan Nassarawa celebration hosted by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, Yusuf urged political leaders to put the state’s interest above personal considerations.

“I am calling on him to look at Kano first, not personal interests, and join the movement for peace and a better Kano,” the governor said.

Yusuf said recent reconciliations among political actors across the country should serve as a lesson for Kano politicians. He said the state needs cooperation among its political class to consolidate peace and stability.

On security, the governor defended the suspension of Hawan Daushe activities, saying the decision was taken to avert possible violence and protect lives and property.

“We chose peace over bloodshed. Our priority is stability in Kano,” he said.

Yusuf however commended Emir Sanusi for his support and guidance, adding that his administration remains committed to safeguarding the traditional institution. He said Kano would host a grand Durbar celebration “capable of attracting global attention” once peace efforts are fully consolidated.

The governor also said the state is investing heavily in water supply, including the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants, to improve access to potable water.

He warned officials in his administration against acts that could create division, saying anyone found undermining the government’s peace efforts would be sanctioned.

Earlier, Emir Sanusi urged the state government to deal decisively with individuals “fomenting unrest and undermining constituted authority.”

“If anybody dares your government, show him the power of authority,” Sanusi said, adding that Islamic teachings support the protection of constituted authority and the maintenance of peace.
