2027: Gov Makinde to name successor next year

Governor Seyi Makinde has hinted at recommending his successor as Oyo State governor by May 29, 2027, saying he would guide residents toward continuity.

Mr Makinde spoke on Monday at the unveiling of the Oyo@50 logo and 50-day countdown ceremony, held at the Governor’s Office premises, Agodi, Ibadan.

He said he would recommend “an individual capable of continuing the good work” his administration has undertaken across the state.

The governor added that the people would accept his recommendation “if they truly want continuity” in governance and development.

Makinde stressed that Oyo State is blessed with “young, vibrant, agile, competent and capable” individuals who can move the state further.

He said his administration was doing its best in infrastructure development, describing ongoing projects as strategic investments for long-term growth.

Makinde disclosed that the first 32-kilometre segment of the Ibadan Circular Road would be inaugurated during the Oyo@50 celebrations on Feb. 3, 2026.

According to him, the state’s 50th anniversary is “worth celebrating,” urging residents to prepare for a memorable programme of events.

Highlights included the unveiling of the anniversary logo alongside traditional rulers, including the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasheed Ladoja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Oyo State was created on Feb. 3, 1976, following the division of the former Western State.
