Seven Killed in Kaduna as Bandits, Illegal Miners Clash
At least seven people were killed on Thursday in a violent confrontation between suspected bandits and illegal miners in Kuyello Ward, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The incident, which occurred around 11 am, sent shockwaves through the community, forcing residents to flee into the surrounding bushes.
According to eyewitnesses, the clash began when a bandit demanded levies from the miners, sparking a dispute that led to his death. The miners allegedly killed the bandit and buried him in a shallow grave. In retaliation, the bandit’s gang members stormed the community, shooting indiscriminately and leaving seven people dead.
Residents lamented that illegal mining had become a curse for the community, attracting bandits and causing violence. “We’re pleading with the government to stop these illegal miners,” one resident said. “They’re the reason the bandits keep returning.”
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident and said personnel had been deployed to the area to prevent further violence. Some attackers were reportedly apprehended during a joint operation involving soldiers, police, and local vigilantes.
The situation has been brought under control, with security teams stationed at the mining site and nearby villages. However, the incident has reopened old wounds, and many residents have started fleeing their homes again.
