Man Tearfully Narrates How He Ended Up In Police Custody After Helping A Woman
A Nigerian man has tearfully narrated how he was arrested by the police simply for refusing to collect a ₦50 payment after helping a woman push her car.
Speaking during a live interview on NTA and TVC News, the man, who identified himself as being from Edo State, explained that his house was previously burnt down in Chisco, a community in the Jakande area of Lagos, following a clash between some Nigerians and a group of Contonou residents living in the area.
When asked whether he had killed anyone, he broke down in tears and said, “No, I didn’t kill anybody.” He added that if he were truly the armed robber the police accused him of being, he wouldn’t appear so unkempt and helpless.
He said, “Look at my condition. I know I look rugged, but I have never done anything like that. I’ve never joined any gang before.”
Narrating what led to his arrest, he explained that he saw a woman whose car had run out of fuel near an Oando filling station and decided to help her push it into the station so she could buy fuel. Afterward, the woman offered him ₦50 as appreciation, but he rejected the money, saying it was too small, and demanded a better reward. When she refused, he angrily picked up a stone to threaten her into increasing the payment.
At that moment, a policeman appeared, claiming he had also helped in pushing the car. The officer then handcuffed him. Although the policeman initially released him, he suddenly came running after him again moments later and re-arrested him.
The man said the incident happened earlier this month around the Lekki area of Lagos, just when he was planning to travel back to his hometown in Edo State. Tearfully, he mentioned that his twin sister lives in Malaysia and all he needed was transport fare to return home.
When asked again if he was a criminal, he firmly replied, “No, I am not a criminal!” He went on to say that he was ready to swear with any kind of Nigerian juju to prove his innocence, even right there during the live interview — insisting that if he were truly guilty, he should die.
The emotional video has since attracted numerous reactions online, with many expressing sympathy for his situation.
