Ebonyi Governor Rewards Man with ₦10m for Trekking from Lagos to Abakaliki
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has awarded ₦10 million to Jeremiah Obaji, a 37-year-old businessman who trekked over 600 kilometers from Lagos to Abakaliki. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Obaji set out on August 22, 2025, walking 633 kilometers in 17 days to show appreciation for the governor’s peacebuilding efforts in the Effium/Ezza-Effium community of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, which has been deeply affected by violent clashes since 2021.
He journeyed only during the day and rested in villages at night, equipped with just two T-shirts and a single pair of shoes. On Sunday morning, he arrived in Abakaliki to a warm reception from cheering residents before being formally welcomed by the Chief of Staff, Emmanuel Echiegu, who represented the governor.
Governor Nwifuru commended Obaji’s resilience and dedication, announcing a ₦10 million reward for his unusual show of solidarity.
Speaking after the presentation, Obaji said his decision was motivated by gratitude for the governor’s role in restoring peace.
“My community was in a serious crisis. Many lives were lost, and properties were destroyed. I trekked to Abakaliki to thank Governor Nwifuru for restoring peace,” he explained.
His media aide, Wisdom Nwedene, added that the large turnout at Obaji’s arrival reflected Ebonyians’ appreciation for peace and Governor Nwifuru’s leadership.
