Governor Makinde’s Commitment to Persons with Disabilities in Oyo State Unprecedented— Timothy Olufemi

Hon. Timothy Olufemi, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters, has highlighted the achievements of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration in promoting the welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Oyo State.

According to Olufemi, the Governor has made significant strides in ensuring access to basic necessities, mobility aids, and employment opportunities for PWDs.

Some of the notable achievements include:

In his words, “As we continue to grow as a united and vibrant part of Oyo State, I find it important to once again reflect on the remarkable strides we’ve made under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde. His support for persons with disabilities has been consistent, intentional, and impactful.

During his first term, the governor:
1. Appointed an Executive Assistant on Disability Matters
2. Appointed a Special Assistant on Special Needs
3. Placed Supervisory Councillors and Special Assistants on Disability Matters across the 33 Local Governments
4. Recruited 150 teachers, with deliberate inclusion of PWDs
5. Employed persons with disabilities in the Hospital Management Board
6. Employed persons with disabilities in the Ministry of Justice
7. Provided empowerment opportunities – some publicized, others quietly carried out
8. Supplied assistive equipment (wheelchairs, hearing aids, braille machines, crutches, etc.) to students and individuals across the state

These actions gave us visibility, relevance, and a sense of belonging in Oyo State.

In his second term, he took it even further:
1. Elevated the Executive Assistant to Director General of the Agency for Persons with Disabilities
2. Promoted the Special Assistant to Executive Assistant on Disability Matters
3. Appointed Special Assistants to Local Government Chairmen across all 33 LGAs
4. Approved over 200 slots in SUBEB for qualified candidates
5. Approved over 200 slots in TESCOM (teaching and non-teaching) – extending benefits even to families of PWDs
6. Ensured our representation in the Civil Service Commission recruitment
7. Renovated special schools across the state, with PWDs fully considered
8. Established the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, backed by a disability law signed by the governor
9. Continued with ongoing empowerment and employment initiatives for our community

The truth is clear: this administration has made history in its inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Oyo State.

Now, I ask you — how do we appreciate a governor who has shown us this much love and support? This is a moment for us to reflect, unite, and reinforce our commitment to progress.

I will be addressing some other matters soon, but for now, I encourage us to focus on all the good that has been done for us — and more that is yet to come.

Let us stay grateful. Let us stay united.
