PHOTOS: Oyo lawmaker, Bisi Oluranti seeks urgent reconstruction of Katangua Akowonjo bridge

Following months of suffering due to the collapse of the Kantagua bridge, Oyo lawmaker, Hon. Bisi Oluranti Micheal, representing Ogbomoso North State Constituency, has pleaded with Governor Seyi Makinde to act swiftly in aiding the residents of the Akowonjo area, and other communities facing similar challenges during this rainy season.

She made the call on Tuesday while inspecting the Akowonjo bridge, which has been severely damaged by terrestrial downpours and causing immense suffering for numerous families.

She noted that the bridge caved in as a result of the downpour and the consequent flood that also swept many structures within the vicinity away.

Stressing that she had once moved a motion on the urgent intervention at the floor of the House in July 2023, she highlighted challenges being faced by residents of the area.

She said: “Despite moving a motion in 2023, a year has passed and no tangible progress has been made, the bridge is completely collapsed, leaving residents of Katangua-Akowonjo and adjoining communities stranded and unable to access essential services such as healthcare, education, and market for agricultural produce.

“His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, has shown a commitment to infrastructural development across the State, particularly in addressing flood-induced damage to roads and bridges. These efforts are commendable. as good road networks are vital to economic growth and the overall well-being of the people by connecting communities and easing the movement of goods and services.

“Katangua-Akowonjo Bridge, which connects Ogbomoso North and Surulere Local Government Areas had been in existence for over 30 years but caved in due to heavy use and rainfall. Its collapse has paralyzed commercial, educational, and healthcare activities, causing significant hardship for the residents. Students can no longer attend school, farmers struggle to transport their goods, and many lives have been endangered due to the lack of access to medical facilities.

“We are appealing to Oyo State Government to act swiftly to save the lives of the people living in the Akowonjo area by fixing the bridge or creating a tentative road for residents.
