JUST IN: 20-yr-old UNILORIN Student commits suicide after lending N500,000 to “online lover” – Management

Sanni Hameedat, a 20-year-old University of Ilorin student, is said to have killed herself after giving N500,000 to a boy she met on the social media app Snapchat.

In a statement provided to media outlets on Wednesday, Rubiks, the private hostel management where Hameedat lived prior to her death, claimed that she was enrolled in her SIWES program at the time of the tragedy.

The management claimed that the pressure from the app agents, who demanded quick reimbursement, along with her brother’s inability to help her financially, contributed to her melancholy and ultimately caused her death.

Suicide’s reason was identified as financial theft. Her mother had given her a considerable amount of money. She met a guy on Snapchat with whom she became pals.

The youngster told the emotional and kind woman that his mother was fighting breast cancer and that she really needed N500,000. She chose to grant him half of the N1 million that she had saved for her mother. Additionally, the boy pledged to pay back the loaned funds.

But when her mother demanded her money back, the youngster quickly stopped speaking to her and blocked her. This caused her much distress, and she turned to borrowing money from several applications to make up the lost N500,000.

As a result, Hameedat was able to obtain N450,000 from the loan applications and add it to her N50,000 in savings to cover the N500,000 loan.

The management further contended that the previous night, she was said to have consumed a bottle of pesticide known as Sniper, and that her roommate (name withheld), who had gone to bed early, woke up in the middle of the night to find her in distress and vomiting.

The statement concluded, “Alarmed, the roommate sought help, and she was rushed to UITH before being declared dead.”

In the meantime, terse messages were sent to Prof. M.T. Yakubu, the Dean of the Student Affairs Unit, and Kunle Akogun, the Head of Corporate Affairs, requesting their comments on the matter. However, both individuals claimed to be participating in the 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremony, which began on Monday, October 16, 2023.

However, when reaching out to Ologundudu Adesunkanmi, also known as Royal Prince, the president of the Student Union, he verified the occurrence and supported the hostel management’s account.

“The Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs are highly cognizant of the matter, and they have notified the relevant authorities to initiate a comprehensive inquiry into the matter,” he stated. It is regrettable that she left the campus community in such a terrible way.
