Peter Obi laments poor electricity in Nigeria, harps on people-oriented leadership

In the wake of concerns emanating from the poor supply of electricity in Nigeria, Peter Obi, presidential candidate under the platform of Labour Party (LP), has hinted at the urgent need for public-spirited leadership.

The former Anambra State governor has been very consistent in his criticism of the epileptic nature of electricity in the country.

Sharing the knowledge gained from his study tour to various countries in a series of interviews, Obi reiterated the exigency of seeking external solution to power crises ravaging the country.

He bemoaned lack of tactics and effective policies by the Federal Government to strengthen the power sector following the national grid collapse for the sixth time.

Tweeting on Thursday on the same problem, the ex-governor compared power supply in Nigeria and South Africa, charging the Nigerian government to learn from best governance practices elsewhere for maximum change.

The tweets read: “Nigeria’s epileptic electricity supply remains a matter of deep concern. Although South Africa, the second biggest economy on the continent has a population of over 60 million, and generates over 50,000 megawatts.

“Her authorities are currently complaining of an energy crisis; thus compelling President Ramaphosa to declare an emergency situation and an intervention policy permitting private persons or corporations to generate up to 100 megawatts without licenses.

“Nigeria, the African giant with over 200 million people, generates a paltry 4000 megawatts, which is less than 10% of South Africa’s without declaring a power crisis or emergency.

“Nigerians should take a cue from global governance best practices; grasp what people-oriented leadership is all about and rise up for effective change.”
