Two LAWMA workers fake own kidnap, arrested

A worker of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) alongside his colleague have been caught by the police for allegedly faking his kidnap and receiving ransom worth N150,000.

The spokesperson of the Police in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, via a statement on Friday, confirmed the arrest.

He said the arrest was carried out by the detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command after a serious investigation on the suspects.

Hundeyin revealed that the 29-year-old suspect, faked his own kidnap, proceeded to Lugbe in the country capital, Abuja and made a video of himself in kidnappers den.

The image maker of the police in the state, has disclosed that the suspect carried his 32-year-old co-worker along in his plan and they requested the sum of N5million ransom but were given N150,000 after extensive negotiation before they were nabbed by the police.

“Investigations revealed that the first suspect, who was arrested in Abuja conspired with the second suspect to self-stage his kidnap and made the video that was sent to the co-worker for ransom.

“The first suspect also confessed to haven shared the ransom equally with the second suspect and used his share in acquiring a generator and other items for himself.

“Suspects will be arraigned in court at the conclusion of investigations,” he said.

The police spokesman also said the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, CP Abiodun Alabi, had given kudos to the detectives for an excellent job.

The police image maker gave a reassurance to residents of Lagos that masterminders of crimes would not go scot free.
