Pirates kidnap 8 boat passengers in Bayelsa

Some gunmen who were suspected to be sea pirates have kidnapped 8 passengers in Bayelsa state.

The gunmen carried out the evil act at the Yenagoa bound speedboats along Brass-Yenagoa waterways in Bayelsa State.

The boat which was conveying about 15 passengers reportedly departed Egweama waterfront in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were reportedly coming from a burial over the weekend before their way was intercepted by the hoodlums in the middle of the sea.

It was revealed by a source that eight of the passengers were kidnapped, while seven freed.

A source said the hoodlums have not communicated the relatives or friends of the victims as at the time of filing this report.

Mr. Daniel Biodoumoye, Chairman, Maritime Workers Union in Brass Local Government Area, while confirming the attack, said, “The pirates intercepted the 200 horse power engine boat close to a rice farm and fled off with eight of the 15 passengers.”

He said a joint team of marine police, members of the union among others saved the seven passengers abandoned by the pirates.

Chief Timipre Saka-Yabi, the Regent of Egwe Ibe Community, has frowned at the kidnap of the passengers and called for the freedom of the victims.

The spokesman of the police in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, while confirming the attack, said necessary investigation was in process to secure the release of the kidnapped victims and apprehend the suspected criminals.
