Landlords of yahoo boys may spend 15 years in jail – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has drawn battle line with landlords who rent their houses to internet fraudsters a.k.a. Yahoo boys.

The anti-graft agency has scheduled Wednesday, to host a discussion on Twitter Spaces for the education of citizens.

The title of the chat, ‘Give your house to Yahoo boys, spend 15 years in jail’, has generated diverse reactions on social media.

The EFCC had repeatedly sounded message of warning to owners of commercial properties against lending them to fraudsters.

Earlier in the month, the anti financial fraud agency has had meeting with hotel owners in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

Michael Nzekwe, the Zonal Commander has shown concern about the “cold complicity by hospitality entrepreneurs”.

Nzekwe accused some owners of commercial properties of easing fraudulent activities by housing them over a long period.

The official declared that such act was against Section 3 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

“The section provides for a prison term of between five and 15 years without option of fine for any person who permits his premises to be used for any offence under the Act,” he said.

The EFCC has told owners of commercial properties to always request from their customers means of identification and to include their occupation during check-in procedure.
