Gunmen launch attack on Kogi police station, kill inspector

Some unknown gunmen on Friday launched an attack on the Okehi Police Area Command and killed an inspector who’s on duty.

MOUTHPIECE NGR gathered that the unknown gunmen were fully armed, and launched an attack on the police command at about 12:30 am on Friday.

MOUTHPIECE NGR also learnt that part of the police command office was set on fire by the attackers.

The spokesperson of the police in the state, William Ovye Aya confirmed the incident via a statement made available to newsmen on Friday.

Aya disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Edward Egbuka, had paid a visit to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

He said the CP has directed that additional operational assets consisting of operatives of the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Quick Response Unit, and State Intelligence Bureau in synergy with other security agencies be deployed to restore peace and order in the area.

“A Police Inspector died in the exchange of fire with the hoodlums, before the Area Commander and a detachment of Military in the area reinforced to the scene of incident, and the attackers fled,” he added.

Aya gave an assurance that the police command is ready to collaborate with other security agencies and well meaning stakeholders to make the state peaceful and secure for all and sundry.

He revealed that the Commissioner of Police has assigned his Deputy in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) the responsibility of commencing investigations into the unfortunate incident.
