Just In: Lagos DPO killed my father who is also a police officer”— Opeyemi Onalaja

The daughter of Sergeant Onajide Onalaja has accused the Divisional Police Officer of the Ilemba Hausa Division, Yahaya Adesina, of shooting him dead in the Ilemba Hausa area of Lagos State.

Mouthpiece NGR exclusively gathered that when Onalaja was killed, the Divisional Traffic Officer of the station, Adekunle Ogundiji, reportedly contacted the victim’s wife, Folasade, and told her that her husband was shot dead by armed robbers when a team of policemen was monitoring compliance with the lockdown at a checkpoint in the area.

Speaking with our correspondent, the daughter of the deceased, Opeyemi Onalaja said her father is a police officer in Ajagbadi police station.”

“On the 11th of may my mum was called from his office that my dad had an accident that he his in a critical condition, unfortunately when she got there she was told robbers shot him in the checking point in front of the station. Immediately she asked for his corpse they told him he has been taking to Yaba military mortuary.”

“So the boss told my mum that they would be paying my mum 2500 every month, as they were about leaving the station to go to mortuary a police man led 3 old men into the station so they came to meet my mum trying to console her telling her the deed has been done, immediately my mum answered that any one that has God has everything. The boss told one of the police officer to follow them to mortuary, when they got there they didn’t allow my mum to see my dad corpse.”

“They said my mum didn’t have a document of identification that the mortuary workers gave the police, immediately the police officer that followed my mum called his boss that they didn’t allow them see the corpse, so the boss answered that the person with the document is at ikorodu that he would bring it the following day, so my mum said they should bring it 8:00am the following morning. The document was brought  past 12 in the afternoon.”

“When she got access to see the corpse she found out that everything the police officer told her at the station was a lie, because his shirt was not buttoning, his trousers was torn that his boxers was showing, his mouth was swollen and his eyes was widely opened, his shoes was not worn properly as if it was removed and the shape of his corpse was as if he was struggled with because his hands and leg was folded.”

“So immediately she asked them in the mortuary that what time was he brought in they said 4am and before she left the station the officer told her the scene happened in the night of 10th of may.

She explained further that immediately she told them to embalm him because they didn’t embalm him they only dropped his corpse and left.

“When my mum left the mortuary a number called but the number was a private number telling my mum that it was my dad boss which is the DPO that killed him that he has a local gun.”

“That it is that local gun he used to shoot my dad after she dropped the call they went to zone 2 to drop a later for the AIG nd also me him but they didn’t allow her him see they only collected the letter. Now what i want his justice, i don’t want them to use there power over us because justice must prevail the name of my late father is ONAJIDE ONALAJA. The name of the DPO is (YAHAYA MUHAMMAD ADESINA CSP coop)”

A source who spoke in confidence with Mouthpiece NGR said Opeyemi’s father was killed through accidental discharge.

“I have a friend whose mum works at the same station and she just confirmed to me that the DPO was the one that shot him”.

He wondered why the police are covering up and lying to everyone about the situation.

Opeyemi, while demanding justice, urged the police authorities to investigate the case to unravel the true circumstances surrounding the killing.

She also appealed to fellow Nigerians to help in demanding for true justice and truth of the matter.

Effort to speak with Ogundiji proved abortive. But an excerpt by PUNCH who also have related version of the story quoted the DPO when contacted as saying, “I am not involved; I am a DTO and we don’t use rifles. I didn’t work on that day because I was in church.”

“The account of what we heard was that a gunshot from somewhere hit him (Onalaja) and the DPO. The DPO showed us the jacket where the pellets pierced through to destroy his two phones, and hit Onajide in the chest.”
