Cyber Crime: A Blessing Or A Curse ?

Cyber crime, popularly called yahoo yahoo in Nigeria is one of the most disturbing crime that is getting rampant by the day. It has gotten rampant to the extent that people have started accepting it as normal. Should it be regarded as a blessing or a curse?

BLESSING
People think it’s a blessing because it has in a way stopped the rate of other crimes especially since it doesn’t involve going to people’s homes to rob them. People believe youths do not have the time for other bad and immoral behaviours like rape, cultism, burglary armed robbery because they are busy talking clients. They even believe they are using their God-given brains and they are punishing the whites for enslaving our forefathers.
CURSE
Others think Cyber crime shouldn’t be the solution to the high crime rate in Nigeria. People think these guys are fraudsters that rob whites of their hard earned money. They believe it is no different from collecting people’s possessions from them at gun point.
 I will say, cyber crime isn’t a blessing and I am not going to outrightly call it a curse but, it has done so many damages to our social system. Some of the damages caused are listed and explained thus;
1. INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF DRUG ADDICTS
 These cyber fraudsters work most times at night and they need things to stay awake,so they mostly do drugs that can help them stay awake. They even get to the extent of misusing drugs e.g cough syrup. These have become really expensive because  pharmacists know what these guys use it for and try extorting them. The same goes for weed and Rohypnol.
2. INCREASE IN RITUAL RATE*
 Most of these guys actually do pure ritual and hide under the guise of doing yahoo. There are so many things they do that put even them, at risk. It isn’t even safe to go out with your friends anymore with the fear of being used.
3. THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION IS BEING UNDERESTIMATED*
Recently, most youths stop learning and even get others dragged into it, telling them how school is scam and how they are already making the money they are supposed to make from the cyber crime activities they engage in.
These are few of the disadvantages of cyber crime,we will continue in the next article.
