Senate Fixes Wednesday for State Police Bill Passage

The Nigerian Senate has fixed Wednesday for the passage of the state police bill after cutting short its recess to consider the legislation.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday transmitted an executive version of the bill to the Senate via a letter dated June 15, 2026. The proposal seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution and create a dual policing system with federal and state police forces operating alongside each other, in response to worsening security challenges.

At plenary Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the bill as a key step toward restructuring Nigeria’s security framework. He immediately referred it to the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, for report and voting.

Akpabio urged all senators to attend Wednesday’s session.

“Every senator should endeavor to come tomorrow to be part of this exercise. We are going to be live tomorrow and your constituents will be seeing what you are doing,” he said.
