June 12: Democracy’s Defining Hour in Nigeria, A Reflection by Hon. George Gbadegesin Ogunlade Executive Chairman, Ogbomoso North LGA

Today, as Nigeria marks June 12 – Democracy Day, we are not just observing a public holiday. We are commemorating a watershed moment in our nation’s democratic evolution. It is a date that symbolises the enduring spirit of the Nigerian electorate, the tenacity of civil resolve, and the unfinished but unstoppable journey toward accountable governance.

On June 12, 1993, Nigerians exercised their democratic right in what is widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in our national history. That election, presumed to be won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a son of the Yoruba nation, was not merely a contest of political will; it was a referendum on unity, justice, and national reawakening.

Yet, the annulment of that election revealed the fragility of democratic institutions under military rule and plunged the nation into a season of civic unrest and moral introspection. For years, the people demanded justice and recognition of that historic vote. It was not until 2018 that June 12 was formally recognised as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, a belated but bold step in acknowledging the collective yearning for representation and rule of law.

As the Chairman of Ogbomoso North, I stand today on the shoulders of those who fought for democracy with conviction and courage. The legacy of June 12 reminds us that governance is a sacred trust — one that must be earned through transparency, inclusion, and service to the people.

Democracy is not merely the absence of dictatorship; it is the active presence of participation, equity, and shared progress. Our administration in Ogbomoso North is committed to these ideals. Through grassroots empowerment, infrastructural renewal, youth engagement, and civic collaboration, we are building a local government that mirrors the aspirations of our forebears.

Let June 12 not be reduced to a ceremonial moment. Let it challenge us — leaders and citizens alike — to deepen democracy at the community level. Let it call us to preserve the integrity of our institutions, protect the will of the people, and promote the culture of good governance.

As we honour the memory of M.K.O. Abiola and all unsung heroes of democracy, we say: the struggle continues — but so does our resolve.

🕊️

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.

May the light of June 12 continue to guide our steps as a people.
