The Tears of Jamb: A systemic Crisis of Malpractice and Glorification By || Open Salawu
In this piece, the Director-General of the Oyo State Project Performance Monitoring Agency, Engr. Muftau Open Salawu, highlighted the issues of exam malpractice, parental involvement, and the challenges facing JAMB in ensuring a fair system.
He wrote: “We ignored the obvious signs and now face the consequences. Parental involvement in exam malpractice and seeking unfair advantages hinders efforts to ensure a fair system, disproportionately affecting honest citizens. We complicate simple processes and cry foul when we face the repercussions.
“We condemn traditional thieves, but ironically, internet fraudsters are glorified. It’s disturbing to hear that some parents even support and organize around these activities.
“JAMB, like many Nigerian sectors, faces challenges from malpractice. The Prof has done well, but I’m concerned about JAMB’s shift towards profit-making. Unlike other countries that prioritize university access, our system is overly competitive from kindergarten, with an emphasis on scoring.
“Improving Nigeria is a shared responsibility, not just a task for leaders. If the JAMB Prof succeeds in tackling malpractice, he should consider stepping aside to preserve his integrity.”
