Ogo-oluwa / Surulere Fed Lawmaker, Ojo Makanjuola  Uncovers Shocking Revenue Leakages in Nigeria Mining Sector

In a bold demonstration of his strong commitment to national accountability, Hon. Ojo Sunday  Makanjuola SMATO, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, has once again proven that his legislative service is driven by purpose, not politics.

During a recent oversight visit alongside fellow members of the Committee, Hon. Makanjuola (popularly known as SMATO) uncovered alarming irregularities at several mining sites across the country. Shockingly, it was discovered that while some mining companies have been actively extracting Nigeria’s mineral wealth, they have failed to remit the appropriate revenues to the Federal Government—a blatant act of economic sabotage

“It’s deeply troubling that these companies have been operating with little to no accountability, depriving our country of critical revenue needed for development,” SMATO remarked during the visit.

This revelation not only highlights the weak enforcement mechanisms within the mining sector but also validates the Committee’s recent push for stricter regulations, improved monitoring, and transparency-driven reforms. SMATO has vowed to pursue legislative action that ensures defaulters are held accountable and that Nigeria’s natural wealth benefits Nigerians.

“This is a wake-up call. We can not allow exploitation without contribution. Our solid mineral resources must translate into solid economic gains for our people,” he added.

As part of follow-up actions, Hon. Makanjuola is spearheading a motion to summon erring mining companies to appear before the House, with a call for forensic audits and stricter fiscal compliance measures.

With SMATO’s leadership, the era of unchecked exploitation is being replaced by one of responsibility, transparency, and national interest.
