Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin: Paliamentarian with unequaled passion for constituents (Episode 1) By || Aremu Adeyemi
According to the Nigerian 1999 Constitution as amended, the duty of any legislator is to make laws for the smooth running and development of our states or nation. Hon. Prince Sanjo Onaolapo Adedoyin, the Majority Leader of the Oyo State House of Assembly and member representing Ogbomoso South State Constituency, is one of those few individuals who got the mandate of his constituents to represent them at the Assembly.
As fate would have it, the frontier of his representation was expanded when he was again unanimously elected among his colleagues to represent the interest of entire Ogbomosoland as the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in the State Assembly, making it double representation!
Hon. Adedoyin, since his inauguration as a legislator, has expanded his scope of work beyond lawmaking in order to better the lives of his constituents. Within the last six years as a legislator, I am one of the privileged individuals who had the opportunity of working closely with him, hence the confidence and knowledge to write about him and his contributions to his constituents, constituency, and personal sacrifice he made to change the face of legislative representation in Ogbomosoland.
Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, despite spending his weekends in Ogbomoso, is always one of the first honourables to resume at the State Secretariat week in, week out in Ibadan, not just for fun, but for the inherent reason of solving one problem or the other bedevilling his constituents. He will be moving from one ministry to another, knocking on the doors of various departments and agencies to find lasting solutions to his constituents’ problems, looking to unlock opportunities for his people and better their lots. There is hardly any commissioner, permanent secretary, director, or chairman of agencies that Sanjo Adedoyin has not met because of his passion for his people!
I vividly recall an incident about four years ago, in the company of Hon. Adedoyin, we toured many ministries, departments, and agencies trying to solve his constituents’ problems. From the Local Government Service Commission, Tescom, SUBEB, Accountant General Office, Ministry of Local Government, and that of Establishment, among others, all because of one issue or the other concerning his people. The resultant stress of all this led to swollen legs, which made it practically impossible for him to stand, talk less of being able to walk, and he was admitted to the hospital for almost a week and was on crutches for almost 10 days after discharge (there are many living witnesses to this narrative across party divides).
What a representative! Sacrificing all, including his health, because of his passion for his constituents and constituency!
